About Yunomine Hot Springs

Discovered around 1800 years ago, Yunomine Hot Springs is said to be Japan’s oldest hot spring.
It is said to have been discovered around the 4th century by O-ato no Sukune, the lord of what was once the Kumano province on the southern part of the Kii Peninsula, and later gained renown as a result of visits from numerous generations of retired emperors.
People making pilgrimages to Kumano would stop here to cleanse themselves before visiting the holy sites and ease their exhaustion after their long journey.
Stroll through the modest streets, watching the steam rise from hot springs along the river, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into olden-day Japan.
There is a famous legend about Yunomine Hot Springs, in which Oguri Hangan, the son of a provincial lord, almost died from leprosy but was brought back from the brink of death by the Yunomine’s healing waters. The legend is still told in sekkyo-bushi folk tales and kabuki plays to this day.
